Urban Loft Hotel: culture, local flavour and cosmopolitan atmosphere
Metal surfaces adorn the interior of the Cologne Hotel

“WE ARE MORE THAN A HOTEL. WE ARE A MEETING PLACE OF CULTURES. LOCAL. CREATIVE. COSMOPOLITAN.” This is the claim presented on the website of the Urban Loft Hotel opened in Cologne in October. “Here you are more than a visitor – because we are more than a hotel.

We are an inhabitable experience, your temporary home,” it continues. As soon as you enter the foyer, it becomes clear what this means.  The newest location of the Althoff hotel group brings together new, exciting and inspirational design elements and appears as a meeting place for likeminded people.  Co-working tables in the lounge invite exchange, while a comfortable fireside corner and drinks created with regional ingredients delight guests in the bar. Sustainability is important to the easily accessible hotel located in the heart of central Cologne.  This starts with the cosmetic products and runs as a green thread from the pillows and bed covers made from materials tested for harmful substances, and extends to the breakfast rich in vitamins and nutrients

The breakfast lounge, bar as well as the co-working space seamlessly merge together into an extensive lounge area. Locality and cosmopolitan attitudes meet on common ground.

The interior is just as colourful and inspirational as the hotel’s motto. Here architect Markus Hilzinger adeptly uses various harmonised materials and colours. The interior is a playful mix of covers with digital colour codes and layers in an open, modern loft – perfectly tailored to the target group as presented on the interior design architect’s website. The appealing combination of materials and colours also includes metal Homapal surfaces. A silver matt décor in a stainless steel look adorns horizontal and vertical spaces. Homapal delivered the “682 aluminium satin-finished steal tone SRM” decoration on long tables in the breakfast and co-working areas. SRM stands for “Scratch-Resistant Matt” and Homapal opens up an entirely new chapter in the complete 2023 collection with this surface. SRM proves its resilience on frequently used tables as well as on the reception desk. The SRM finish gives the surface attributes according to EN 438-Part 3 in terms of scratch resistance, surface abrasion and stain sensitivity, ideal for horizontal applications. The new series of surfaces by Homapal thus allows planners, processors and architects to use real metal surfaces horizontally without hesitation for the first time. What’s more, the velvety soft feel appears welcoming, while the anti-fingerprint characteristics make the tabletops durable and low-maintenance eye-catchers. A special process produces the super-matt look with anti-fingerprint and special depth effect.

The same décor – but without the SRM coating – can be found on the walls and archways in the reception area, as well as in the book shelves of the reading corner and as emphasising features on the bar. Here the architect consistently shows how different materials can be harmoniously combined to great effect. The incredibly scratch-resistant matt surface with anti-fingerprint properties is available in combination with five magnet and 22 metal finishes.
